Victory!
After months of opposition campaigning, from local residents, activists and the local Labour Party, Leeds City Council have finally shelved the plans to build the waste transfer facility off Kirkstall Road. The council have stated that they abandoned the proposed site after deciding it was “not good value for money” – rather than the concerns of the community and the issues surrounding the site raised by campaigners (traffic, smells, flies, hygiene, 100,000 tonnes of black bin waste a year etc) – but whatever the reason campaigners (myself included) are still pleased that the site will not go ahead and the local community will not have the ill-advised site on their doorstep, disrupting their lives. Quite interesting that they have suddenly realised, after all their planning, that the site is not financialy viable though – amidst all the increasing local opposition to the site and press coverage of the campaign. Hmm…
